Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy, 19 May – 29 August 2021

The British Surrealist, Eileen Agar, is being given a commendable retrospective at the Whitechapel Gallery in East London entitled Angel of Anarchy named after one of Agar’s sculptures in the exhibition. At the same time, a complementary exhibition in the Whitechapel entitled Phantoms of Surrealism showcases eleven women surrealists around at the same time as Agar. All artists were part of the International Surrealist Exhibition held at the New Burlington Galleries in Mayfair in 1936.

David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020

In addition, the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly has launched two major exhibitions by British artists. David Hockney’s exhibition is called The Arrival of Spring, Normandy 2020 in which Hockney exhibits over a hundred works capturing the arrival of spring during lockdown on his ipad and printed for gallery viewings. Michael Armitage’s exhibition, entitled Paradise Edict showcases his latest work inspired by political unrest in his mother’s native homeland Kenya. Armitage also brings work by a group of East African artists who have inspired him over the years.
